Two of TheAntsNest.com`s and South Africa`s most talented and well known Graffiti artists, Faith47 and Falko, have (with sponsorship from the British Council South Africa) arranged one of the most successful & exciting graffiti art events that South Africa has ever seen!
The project, "Lines of Attitude", featured graffiti artists from South Africa (Faith47 and Falko), Kenya (Phiks) and the UK (Mode2 & Dreph). The theme of "Media & Cultural Expression" aimed to explore the potential of Graffiti culture & its relevance within society, while hopefully broadening the "latitudes" of people`s perceptions as to what constitutes media expression and encouraging the youth to give public voice to their experiences, through art.
Stage 1 of Lines of Attitude, saw Mode2 and Dreph join Faith47 and Falko in Cape Town and then travel up to Kenya to meet up with Phiks. There they produced a series of murals with the goal of uplifting and introducing life and colour to various walls within disadvantaged Kenyan communities.
Stage 2 saw all the artists working on South African walls as well as producing a series of canvasses for an exhibition held in District 6 in Cape Town.
The exhibition was fantastic! An incredible multi-storied, vintage factory space, housing a truly beautiful spectacle of some of amazing Graffiti art from the body of international artists. The subject matter of the work mostly depicting the highly relevant social issues of poverty, war and the importance of education was accompanied by local "District 6 cuisine" and performances by local hip-hop artists and mc`s.
Stage 3 was the "Park Jam" which saw another Graffiti Artist from TheAntsNest.com`s network, Rasty, flying down from Johannesburg to join the rest of the crew in order to uplift an area in Hout Bay, Cape Town. The event was highly successful and the locals were thrilled to see the transformation of their dilapidated park wall now showcasing the artwork of some of the worlds top graffiti mural artists.
TheAntsNest.com would like to extend congratulations to all the artists involved in this incredible initiative and may there be many more to follow.
Most importantly: A huge thank you to the British Council South Africa for supporting a project of this nature and thereby joining the struggle to promote the perception of Graffiti as ART and NOT vandalism!
Do you have an exhibtion coming up? Let us know!
